Three Tips for Arthritis Relief

We asked Dr. Bill Barnes, an orthopaedic surgeon with more than thirty years of experience, to answer the following question in two minutes or less:

What are the top three things a patient with arthritis should focus on to find relief?

His answer may not be a surprise to many readers - and unfortunately there is no "magic bullet" to treat arthritis - but we felt that it was worth sharing as a good reminder of what really matters when it comes to joint pain relief.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. You may have heard that every pound of excess weight exerts about 4 pounds of extra pressure on the knees. So a person who is 10 pounds overweight has 40 pounds of extra pressure on his knees; if a person is 50 pounds overweight, that is 200 pounds of extra pressure on his knees. Every pound lost means less pressure on your knees, so focus on a realistic method for losing weight one pound at a time.

2. Exercise. Dr. Barnes recommends non-weight bearing exercises such as swimming, cycling, seated strength exercises, yoga and Pilates. Not only will exercise improve your muscle strength and general health, it can help with the weight loss when combined with a sensible diet.

3. Natural Anti-Inflammatory Supplements. Different patients experience different results with supplements, but many have sworn tremendous relief using them. You can learn about different types of natural supplements designed for arthritis relief at WebMD.
